Butcher of the Month
John Mettrick
Can you give us a quick summary of yourself?
I started as a Saturday lad in my Dad’s shop at the age of 11 cleaning fridges; he nearly finished me off there and then with bleach poisoning. I progressed to dog meat then cutting and shingling bacon, making sausages and then serving customers. As a student I continued to work in the shop on Saturdays and holidays. I then went on to follow another passion and did a degree at Leeds University which resulted in a 2.1 BSc Hons in Botany.
Can you give us a quick summary of the business?
JW Mettrick & Son has been in the family for over 100 years spanning five generations and I am very glad that I now choose to continue that tradition. The first shop was in Hadfield (Royston Vasey for ‘League of Gentlemen’ fans). The business today consists of two retail shops, a bakery, cutting room, abattoir, online shop and quite recently a pop up shop. The retail side of the business is run by me and the processing side by my brother Steven.
